Stuttering Therapy for School-Age Children

Individual Therapy
Therapy for school-age children (ages 6-12) starts with an evaluation, to assess the child's needs.  Then, therapy is typically held once weekly, for a 30 or 45 minute session (depending on the child's wants and needs).  While the therapy is focused around the child, parents and caretaker involvement, education, and counseling are all integrate parts of the process.

At the STAR Center, therapy is implemented using a comprehensive approach, that incorporates physical strategies to make talking easier, as well as education, reducing fears, counseling, and parent/family involvement.

While there is no cure for stuttering, speech therapy and stuttering support and therapy can help people better manage their stuttering.  Research has shown that stuttering support and therapy can reduce negative effects of stuttering, such as improve self-confidence and develop positive attitudes about speaking.

Kids Group
After attending individual therapy sessions, we often recommend that children join  The STAR Center's bi-weekly, 60 minute kids group.  The kids group gives school-age children the opportunity to get support from other children who stutter, share challenges and accomplishments related to stuttering, and practice speaking techniques in a safe atmosphere.
